Djibouti and Japan maintain a cordial and cooperative relationship based on mutual interests in areas such as security, development, and trade. Although Djibouti and Japan are geographically distant, their diplomatic, political, economic, and cultural engagements have grown steadily over the years.

Diplomatic and Political Relations

  • Establishment of Diplomatic Relations: Diplomatic relations between Djibouti and Japan were formally established in 1977, following Djibouti’s independence in 1977. Both countries have since maintained an open channel of communication and cooperation in various international forums.

  • Political Cooperation: Djibouti and Japan have cooperated in the areas of global peace, security, and development.

  • Japan’s Support for Djibouti’s Development: Japan has extended support to Djibouti’s political stability and development initiatives, often through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
